Bound by "reeti, rewaaz and parampara"

Relevant news article: HC denies divorce to paranoid husband

We see so many campaigns against domestic violence and about equal rights to women, and about empowering women; however, sometimes it just amazes me what some women endure for no apparent reason.

If you haven't read the article, its about a couple who've been married for 9 years. Husband's complaint is that ever since the day of their marriage, his wife has been "unchaste" and "has had an affair with almost every man she's met." The allegations of course are baseless, and the husband is actually paranoid.

The husband wanted a divorce because of his wife's (alleged) behavior. If I was in the woman's place, I would have gladly divorced this lunatic. However, this woman took the matter up to court, to NOT allow the divorce and for "restitution of conjugal rights."

After 9 years of enduring baseless allegations, even questioning the paternity of their own child, and facing cruel behavior, why the woman would want to continue to be in this "marriage" is beyond me. The only reason I can think of is the one I put in the title: divorce is still not a part of a major portion of our society. Our "reeti, rewaaz and parampara" convinces her that putting up with her paranoid husband's nuances is her duty. :(
